Medical MRI Analysis
Medical MRI analysis applies computer vision to volumetric scans for tumor segmentation, lesion detection, organ measurement, classification, registration, and longitudinal change tracking. Inputs include one or more MRI sequences, scanner metadata, acquisition protocol, patient-level context, and prior scans. Targets may be voxel masks, exam-level labels, lesion counts, or measurements for radiologist review. The model supports triage or measurement assistance; it does not replace clinical adjudication.
Framing
Brain tumor work often uses MRI segmentation, while other applications use MRI classification or detection. Evaluation needs detection and segmentation metrics such as Dice, lesion recall, boundary error, and patient-level sensitivity. Splits must be patient-level and site-aware to avoid data leakage. The BraTS 2021 benchmark paper describes a multi-institutional mpMRI benchmark focused on glioma segmentation and molecular-status classification across 2,040 patients.

This toy mask illustrates why a high Dice score can still miss a clinically important small lesion:

The true mask has 10 positive voxels and the predicted mask has 10 positive voxels. Their overlap is 9 voxels, so Dice is . The score is high because the large region overlaps well, but the isolated lesion is missed and one nearby false positive is added. That is why medical image analysis evaluation should include lesion-level recall and reader review, not just aggregate voxel overlap.
Failure Modes
Models can fail under scanner, site, protocol, contrast timing, artifact, and population domain shift. Missing sequences are common in clinical practice. Labels can encode institutional conventions rather than pathology, and post-treatment scans may have ambiguous enhancement. Deployment should log abstentions and route uncertain cases to radiology review.
